St Mary’s celebrate St Patrick with Green Day

27th Mar 2024

The boys and girls , and indeed the staff, of St Mary's Primary school, honoured our national patron saint, Saint Patrick on Friday 15th March, with what we affectionally referred to as 'Green Day'.

There was an abundance of flags, shamrocks and decorations along with instruments, music and dance to pay homage to this world famous Saint.   'Green day' presented pupils with an opportunity to showcase their talents and embrace the spirit of the occasion.

There were plenty of Irish eyes smiling and the children and adults thoroughly enjoyed all the wonderful talent on display. As we all know, the Irish are famous across the world for their story-telling and musicality. As such, it was the turn of St Mary's to celebrate our patron Saint, as well our as heritage and culture, something we are most proud of.

Saint Patrick is known for his courage, humility and faithfulness. Because of missionaries, Saint Patrick became known throughout the world. Today, over 200 countries hold big parades on 17 March, the feast of Saint Patrick. And because his message reached so far, Nigeria also chose St Patrick as its patron saint.

Prayer was very important to Saint Patrick. He encouraged people to pray every day, so that they might know how close God is, shielding and guiding us. Let’s finish with a famous prayer written by Saint Patrick. And let us ask him to pray with us for all the children of Ireland.

St Patrick's prayer
I arise today, through God's strength to pilot me, God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's shield to protect me.

A special word of thanks to all the staff, who lent their talents and helped ensure the day ran smoothly with supervision of our children in the hall.

So sit back and let us bring the spirit of Green Day, to you!
